Worm Gearboxes

A high gear reduction in a compact design.

STM W Import Universal Worm Gearbox

The worm gear resembles a screw with helical teeth, called the worm, while the worm wheel is a gear with teeth that mesh with the worm. The worm typically has a single thread, resulting in a high gear ratio, which means that one rotation of the worm causes only a small rotation of the worm wheel. This configuration allows worm gearboxes to achieve high torque multiplication.

The advantages of worm gearboxes include their compact size, high gear ratios, and self-locking properties. The self-locking feature means that the worm gear prevents the worm wheel from driving the worm, providing a mechanical advantage to hold the load in position without the need for additional braking mechanisms. This makes worm gearboxes ideal for applications where holding loads in place or preventing reverse rotation is important.

Benefits

  • High Gear Reduction: Worm gearboxes can achieve high gear ratios, often ranging from 5:1 to 100:1 or even higher. This allows for significant speed reduction between the input and output shafts, enabling the transmission of high torque at lower speeds.
  • Compact Size: Worm gearboxes are relatively compact compared to other types of gearboxes that offer similar gear ratios. This makes them suitable for applications where space is limited or where a compact design is desired.
  • Self-Locking: Worm gearboxes possess a self-locking feature, meaning that the worm gear can hold the load in position without requiring additional braking mechanisms. This makes them ideal for applications where the gearbox needs to prevent reverse rotation or hold the load in place without the need for external locking devices.
  • High Torque Transmission: Worm gearboxes are capable of transmitting high torque due to the large contact area between the worm and worm wheel. This makes them well-suited for applications that require high torque output.
  • Smooth and Quiet Operation: Worm gearboxes generally operate smoothly and quietly, which is advantageous in applications where noise and vibration need to be minimized.
  • Versatility: Worm gearboxes can be used in various configurations, such as inline, offset, or right-angle setups, making them adaptable to different spatial constraints and application requirements.
