Problem

A heavy-duty drilling machine used in mining operations required replacement drive components after critical parts failed. The equipment relied on older, non-standard sprockets from a previous machine model, and original spare parts were no longer available. With the drilling system operating in demanding environments where downtime can significantly impact productivity, sourcing suitable replacements quickly became essential to avoid extended equipment outages.

Solution

We assessed the damaged components and reverse-engineered the original sprockets by measuring the existing broken parts. This allowed us to manufacture precise 1:1 replacement components that matched the original specifications and ensured compatibility with the machine’s chain drive system. By reproducing the obsolete sprockets accurately, the replacement parts could be installed without requiring modifications to the equipment.

Outcome

The reverse-engineered sprockets successfully restored the drilling machine to full operation. By manufacturing exact replacements for the obsolete components, the need for costly machine redesign or replacement was avoided. The new parts were supplied within a reasonable lead time, minimising downtime and allowing the equipment to return to reliable service in the mining operation.
