Twiflex was formed in 1946 in the UK, by Charles W. Chapman and A.V Nicholle, as an engineering research company, who were consultants to the Ford Motor Co. in the development of their Diesel engines. By 1947, Chapman patented an automatic, torsional vibration limiting, flexible clutch coupling. This was adopted by the British Navy and certain allied Navies for coupling high-power marine diesel engines to gearboxes in the main transmission of fleets of Minesweepers. A rapidly expanding worldwide demand now for Twiflex products meant the continued design and development of a range of clutches and flexible couplings.

Twiflex expansion continued and by 1951, introduced disc braking technology to industrial applications. Twiflex’s continual development has resulted in the company being able to offer one of the largest ranges of pneumatically, hydraulically and mechanically applied industrial disc brake calipers in the world, along with a full line of thrusters, disc brake systems, flexible couplings and shaft clutch couplings.
