A locking assembly is installed internally between the shaft and the hub to provide a back-lash-free alternative to traditional keys and keyways. This type of connection is used mainly for transmitting torque. With easy assembly and disassembly and a transmittable torque of between 11Nm to 1,870,000Nm and a nominal diameter of 6mm to 700mm.

A shrink disc coupling, on the other hand, is an external clamping element that also connects the shaft and hub and is tight-fitting, friction-locked, and flanged-shaped. These are far more powerful and are made for heavy machinery such as mining-related industries. TAS Schafer manufactures many varieties of shrink discs including 2-part shrink discs, 3-part shrink discs and hydraulic shrink discs.
